Toulouse is the fourth largest city in France sitting at the centre of the European airspace industry. Its university, the second largest in France, is also one of the oldest in Europe - founded in 1229. It is also the capital of the Midi-Pyrenees region in south-western France, lying on the banks of the River Garonne, half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to its strategic position, providing a link between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, the Romans made it their colony in the 2nd century. After a dark period during the 14th century, including the Hundred Years War and the plague 1420 marked a turning point as Charles VII introduced a judicial body to the city and it soon began to prosper. A period of urban reorganisation began from the 17th to the 19th century that would revolutionise its image. Toulouse continued to flourish in the 20th century and can now boast having the country’s second biggest university as well as being France’s aeronautics and space exploration capital.

A two-day trip
Two days is just enough time to get to know the historical wonders of Toulouse. Hotel Premiere Classe Toulouse Nord – L’Union is just a short walk from the centre, while Hotel Premiere Classe Toulouse Nord – Sesquieres, Hotel Premiere Classe Toulouse Ouest – Blagnac Aeroport, Hotel Premiere Classe Toulouse Sud - Labege Innopole, and Hotel Premiere Classe Toulouse Sud – Portet are just a short taxi ride from the town centre. The highlight of Toulouse are the famous buildings and architecture that make up the beauty of the city so spend your first day strolling around glancing at the historic churches and the likes of the Hotel d’Assezat and Capitole buildings. Spend day two visiting some of the city’s glorious museums, such as the modern arts museum Les Abattoirs. Follow this up with a visit to Theatre du Capitole in the evening for a spot of ballet or opera to complete a perfect trip!

A one-week break
A week will give you the time to fully get to know and appreciate the city. Toulouse is famous for its advancements in aeronautics and even have their own City of Space theme park. Located on the eastern outskirts of the city, the park which includes full-scale models of some of the most famous rockets, a planetarium, exhibitions and a 300-seat IMAX cinema is a must visit if you have the time. Take a stroll down the Canal du Midi which connects the Garonne River to the Etang de Thau on the Mediterranean - so scenic that it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A family holiday
Toulouse is a great place to take the whole family! Whether it is visiting some of the city’s most beautiful parks, visiting a Stade Toulousain rugby union match or visiting the national orchestra of the city there will be something for everybody!

Transport
Toulouse is served by the Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, located 4.1 miles northwest of the city and is a hub for both European and domestic flights. From the airport a bus shuttle can take you to the city in about 30 minutes. The city’s train station is in the heart of the city and trains leave regularly to major French cities as well as into Spain. As well as an extensive bus system Toulouse is also served by a metro system with five different lines operating around the city.

Gastronomy
In Toulouse gastronomy is part of the city’s lifestyle. The biggest of the local specialties which have to be tried are ‘foie gras’ (duck liver mainly made in the region), ‘cassoulet’ (a stew made with white beans, various kinds of meat and pork skin) and duck, be it the duck confit or duck fillet which are both extremely popular. ‘Saucisses de Toulouse’ ( a type of herb sausage) and ‘garbure’ (a cabbage soup with poultry) are also favourite dishes from the region which its inhabitants are very proud of.

Events
Toulouse offers a wealth of festivals, fairs, seasonal sporting events, concerts and parades throughout the year. A particular highlight is the Garonne Festival in June where each year a different country is invited to stage events over five days including exhibitions, music concerts and parades. Another big draw for the crowds is the Toulouse International Fair in March when over 150,000 visitors come to the Parc des Expositions de Toulouse to attend this ever-popular fair which has a different theme each year. The Toulouse Festival of Children’s Theatre in June, Flamenco Festival in April and Antiques Fair in November are just a few on the never-ending list of events.

Interesting Fact
Toulouse is popularly known as the ‘pink city’ due to the rose-coloured bricks used in the construction of most of the city's buildings.
