Honfleur is a town in France’s Lower Normandy region located on the southern bank of the Seine estuary, across from Le Havre. It is known for its picturesque port and slate fronted houses which have often been painted by notable artists such as Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind. These artists formed the ‘Honfleur School’ that contributed to the arrival of the Impressionist movement.

Honfleur of a place of extreme strategic significance during the Hundred Years War and was fortified by Charles V. Despite this it was captured by the English for periods in 1357 and between 1419 – 1450. When in French possession the town was used to launch raiding parties against the English coast, one of which partially destroyed the English town of Sandwich. After the Hundred Years War the town experienced a boom in maritime trading which continued until the 18th century, disturbed only by the war of Religions in the 16th century.

Two-day break:
One of the most impressive sights in Honfleur is Saint Catherine’s Church, the oldest wooden church in France. Built just after the Hundred Years War, the church has a bell tower built separately from the main building. This was so if the bell was hit by lightening the main body of the wooden church wouldn’t burn down. It is less than a 10-minute drive from the Premiere Classe Hotel Honfleur, or can be reached by a 20-minute walk.

Seven-day break
About a kilometre outside the town s the Notre Dame de Grace Mont Joli, a beautiful old church with a fantastic view. The walk from town is also a chance to get a bit of exercise. Near to Saint Catherine’s Church is the Musee Eugene Boudin, a charming little art museum with a number of Boudin works and a few Monets. This is a great visit for anyone with even a passing interest in art.

Family Holiday
A half-hour walk from the Premiere Classe Hotel Honfleur is NaturoSpace, a charming wildlife display that is great for all members of the family. This visit is great value for money and features a wide range of types of wildlife from numerous species of butterfly to quail and other birds. You and you family can spend at least half a day here discovering all the animals NaturoSpace has to offer.

Transport
Honfleur does not have a train station, so the easiest way is probably to first go to Le Havre and then get a bus if you are hoping to use public transport or simply renting a car and driving to the town. Once you are in Honfleur everything is within walking.

Food
The Lower Normandy region is famous for its farms and their healthy produce. This ranges from dairy products to fresh apples and pears. Make sure you try some of the region’s cheeses like Camembert and Pont l’Eveque. You might also want to sample the area’s Andouille de Vire sausages and salted butter caramels.

Events
In June Honfleur hosts the Fete des Marins, a celebration that blends religious services with folk celebrations and features colourfully painted fishing boats. In July there is the Festival de la Me in Deauville, a fashionable big band celebration that holds concerts at the casino theatre and around the town.

Did You Know ?
The exploring expedition that eventually founded Quebec in Canada was launched from Honfleur. Following this Honfleur enjoyed excellent trade links with Quebec and other parts of Canada, making it one of the most prominent trading posts in France.
