Dunkerque is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It is just over 6 miles from Belgium. Dunkerque is a historic city and has been the scene of countless battles including, most famously, The Battle Of Dunkerque during World War 2, when more than 300,000 French and British soldiers escaped following German invasion. The city’s occupation by the Dutch is still evident in the occasional speaker of Flemish, a variety of the Dutch language. Nowadays Dunkerque is a more peaceful place and, with an unspoilt coastline featuring sand dunes and miles of golden beach, it is the perfect place for a family holiday or a short break.
Dunkerque is a lively place with a diverse community and plenty of schools and universities. The locals are friendly and the city’s carnival attracts thousands of visitors every year. With quaint cafes and breathtaking scenery it is a lovely place to visit.
A two-day break
In two days you can begin to understand what makes this place so amazing and why so many countries fought over it. On your final day, discover the history of this fascinating city at The ‘Musée Portuaire’.
A week-long stay
A week gives you plenty of time to discover Dunkerque and its interesting facets. The beautiful belfry and UNESCO listed town hall and the 15th century octagonal ‘Leughenaer Tower’ are both worth a visit. Golfers might enjoy an afternoon or two on the 27-hole golf course. For more active visitors there is hiking and bike riding or you could give some laid-back fishing a try. Have a seafood lunch at one of the nearby restaurants. In the evening head back to your conveniently located Premiere Classe Hotel Dunkerque - Saint-Pol-Sur-Mer.
