Roissy-en-France or Roissy, as it is better known, is a commune situated in the Val d’Oise department in the Ile-de-France region. Part of Paris' main airport, Charles De Gaulle, is situated in Roissy,which makes it easily accessible for tourists. Yet despite the development and expansion of the airport locally known as Roissy Airport, the town has still managed to retain its charm.
Roissy is packed with character, history and culture. The streets are guarded by sculptures perched on street corners and next to parks. The ruins of a 16th century castle and a glorious church are just some of the architectural treasures that adorn this delightful destination. Whether you want to spend the day at the amusement park, eat at one of the lovely restaurants or simply just explore, Roissy is an ideal destination for a weekend break or a family holiday.
A two-day break
Two days gives you just enough time to uncover some of the treasures of Roissy. Take a trip to The Church of St Eloi, bishop of Noyon and advisor to King Dagobert, who died in 659. He is the protector of horses and the patron saint of blacksmiths and precious metal workers. The church has been lovingly restored and is in a typical Renaissance style. It was made a listed building in 1942. Spend your second day in the Parc de L’Orangerie with its six lush themed gardens and circuit training stations for the sporty travellers.
A week-long stay
A week gives you more than enough time to discover the charm of Roissy and the Premiere Classe Roissy Hotel, is the perfect base from which to explore the city. Take a tour round the village using the 16 stage guided tour recording. Visit the elaborate remains of the castle with its wonderful arches and ornate motifs. Look out for the east gable doors of the castle stables and count the impressive sculptures that adorn the pretty streets.
A family holiday
Parc Asterix is a theme park in Roissy and is the perfect place for a fun-filled day out. It is less busy than the neighbouring Disneyland but there is still plenty to do. Look forward to roller coasters, water chutes, boat rides and even dolphins.
Transport
Roissy is probably the closest village to Paris’ main airport, Charles de Gaulle. Once you arrive there is a good train service which serves most of the surrounding area, including central Paris and Lille. The TGV also runs from the airport, as do buses, which serve Roissy and the surrounding areas.
Gastronomy
Roissy has a wide variety of places to eat to suit all tastes and budgets. The Place is one of the best for French cuisine. It is decorated in modern shades and the food and service are both excellent. Try the Jalapeno Salmon Foie Gras or the Jalapeno Salmon. For tasty Japanese food and fabulous sushi, visit Oishii. This eatery is situated right next to the airport so it's ideal if you're looking for somewhere nice to eat when you arrive.
Events
Roissy hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. The Japanese Film festival, held during winter (usually in November), attracts visitors from all over the world and screens a range of intriguing and quirky films. Screenings also take place in the surrounding areas.
