A fortress on a rocky outcrop.Standing 750 metres above the plain, the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is a fortress that was built in the 12th century and rebuilt and modernized at the end of the 15th century. It was abandoned in 1633 and then became the property of Emperor William II of Hohenzollern in 1899, who dreamt of reviving the Western Empire and satisfied his passion for the Middle Ages by ordering the restoration of the Château. The architect Bodo Ebhardt, in charge of the restoration, used scientific principles to support his work: research into archived documents, archeological excavations, architectural studies and comparisons with other monuments from the end of the Middle Ages.At the beginning of the 20th century, this Château symbolized the young Hohenzollern dynasty.Today it is an impressive example of a successful restoration project.>BR>The fortress was built on a rocky outcrop, making it very easy to defend, and now provides a wonderful view over the Alsace plain, the Vosges, the Black Forest, and sometimes even as far as the Alps.
