Floating worlds. The Idemitsu museum in Tokyo boasts one of the richest and most beautiful collections of Ukiyo-e paintings in all of Japan. The exhibition will be taking place at the Cernuschi museum, displaying 112 pieces (rolls, folding screens, e-maki and length-wise rolls…) signed the best in the field. The exhibition will be focused on the history of this fascinating art school from the Fuzokuga tradition of the 17th century to the great masters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Due to technical reasons of conservation, the works will be presented in two segments displayed alternatively over a period of three months. The Ukiyo-e school of painting (Ukiyo-e is also known as "pictures of the floating world") knew a golden age until the mid 19th century. The development of this school was intimately tied to the development of Japanese cities: Kyoto, Osaka and of course Tokyo.
