All year long
The food tells a tale…The regions of Alsace and Lorraine are full of culinary delights and gastronomic specialities, from macaroons to madeleines, from quiche lorraine to doughs, all of it washed down with a delicious white wine. And of all of these, which is our favourite? The 'baba au rhum'…Stanislas Lecsczinski, the former king of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, found his kugelhopf too dry. He asked to be brought a saucer of Malaga wine, perhaps because he remembered a Polish dessert that uses Hungarian wine in the same way. He tasted it, paused, and then returned the plate to the kitchen so that saffron could be added to the dish.Tasting it again, and finding it very much to his tastes, he ordered that a similar cake should be made and served to him often. His preferred reading at the time being 'One Thousand and One Nights', it seemed only natural he should call the cake Ali-Baba. And so the 'baba au rhum' was born! All this and more at the weekly Nancy markets.
