The Benedictine Abbey, Fontdouce was founded in 1111. This monastery was originally extremely austere, although it quickly developed and improved to become increasingly dependent on earthly authorities.Consequently, Fontdouce was a favoured target at the time of the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century, then the Revolution. When the last of the monks left in 1793, the abbey was ruined and deformed by destruction. Fontdouce was then sold as a national asset to be used as an farm.Restoration work on Fontdouce Abbey, which started in 1970 has enabled the 12th and 13th century monastery to be returned to its former splendour, at the heart of a protected natural area.
