Basilica of St. Sernin

This Romanesque construction is considered the largest in the whole of Western Europe. It is a stunning edifice and the nave in particular is considered its greatest asset. Visitors flock to this 11th century basilica with its sculpted Romanesque capitals and the 12th century tympanum. The crypt is home to a number of reliquaries including that of Saint Sernin, first Bishop of Toulouse who was martyred in the year 250 and to whom the basilica is dedicated.

There are also nineteenth century chalices and ciborium on display for visitors. The Saint Sernin Basilica constitutes an essential stage of the Saint Jacques de Compostela pilgrimage on the way to Arles.
