TOURIST DESTINATION

Centre d'Accueil et d'Interprétation de Thiepval

In 1916, the German troops resisted the assault of the British on Thiepval Hill. 20,000 soldiers met their death here and it took another three months of fighting for the Germans to recapture the site.

The Tower of Ulster (or Helen Tower), erected in 1921, and the Great Somme Memorial, built in the 1930s, pay tribute to Irish and British soldiers who lost their lives here.

Since 2004, the Thiepval Visitors' Centre, situated near these two memorials, informs the public about the battles that took place here, setting them within the broader context of the First World War (1914-1918).
