The Saint-Etienne de Châlons-en-Champagne (twelfth to seventeenth century) cathedral is original and faultless. Due to fires, it has been rebuilt four times over the centuries. A pinch of Roman (the crypt and northern tower), a dash of Baroque (the frontage rebuilt in the seventeenth century) and a good dose of radiant Gothic (all the rest) make it an extraordinary rarity in architecture, worthy of admiration. Among its "treasures" are the Roman baptismal fonts of dark schists shimmering a bluish colour, a speciality of Tournai where workshops were chain manufacturing it during the twelfth century.
