Chambord Castle

This hunting castle, of which the construction began in 1519, combines feudal and Italian inspiration. With its central keep and its four towers surrounded by a rampart, and with its two wings comprising the royal apartments and the chapel, it is the only royal castle which has retained its original layout with practically no modifications.

Its famous double-helix staircase was reputedly designed by Leonardo de Vinci. The castle is located in the largest enclosed forest in Europe which covers 5 440ha and is surrounded by a wall measuring 32km.
