This ancient fortified Gallo-Roman camp from the 3rd century is a castle that was enlarged by Vauban, Colbert and Richelieu under Louis XIV. The castle was damaged during the Second World War.State prison, army headquarters, it was donated to the National Navy in 1945 and turned into the maritime headquarters. It dominates the Penfeld opposite the Recouvrance and is home to the Marine museum. It is now restored and is the oldest active military stronghold in the world.Modified many times over, the castle bears witness to a fate married to the sea, the history of a city, a region and a whole country. This exceptional landmark has been a classified historical monument since 1923.
