Under orders of the Cathar clergy, Raymond de Péreille undertook the task of creating a fortress out of the ruins perched on the mountain. In 1232, Montségur became headquarters to the Cathar sect. The Ecumenical Council of Béziers decided the castle should be overtaken and destroyed, and so a winter siege was launched, which led to the surrender of the Cathars. They were given the choice to either renounce their faith or be burned to death.Along with these men who chose death, the flames of the Catharist movement were also extinguished.
