Designed by engineering genius Vauban, the citadel in Besançon was raised between 1674 and 1711 and stretches over 11 hectares. What was at first a purely military edifice has since become a place of culture; the citadel is home to the Comtois museum, the Resistance and Deportation museum, and the Zoo-Museum. Vauban's masterpiece is among the most visited sites in Franche-Comté. The Besançon citadel has been listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site along with a number of Vauban's other constructions.
