The Cuves de Sassenage caves were formed one-and-a-half-million years ago, fashioned by an underground river - the Germe - from the limestone massif, the fossilized remains of a tropical sea. The Cuves have been attracting tourists since the 19th century and are a particular favourite for visitors from Grenoble, looking for a refreshing and dramatic day out.The site, with its maze of galleries and rooms, is impressive, to say the least. The natural sculptures ignite the imagination, inviting comparisons with fantastical forms: thus, a stalagmite becomes a magician's hat, and in the Saint-Bruno chamber, a concretion is easily confused with a creche.A magical place, full of rivers and underground lakes, that is sure to delight speleologists.
