La Rochelle's new aquarium, which opened in December 2000 in the heart of the town. houses almost 12,000 marine creatures (from the Atlantic, Mediterranean or Pacific) visible inside the 65 tanks which recreate their natural environment. An aquarium inside the entrance lobby looks after the new-borns: it provides visitors with a chance to observe the newly-born fish as well as young algae shoots and in so doing it showcases the breeding activity undertaken by the Aquarium.A playful approach immerses the younger members of the public into the fascinating world of the aquatic universe.
