The city of Le Havre was severely damaged during World War II. Its reconstruction was carried out from 1945 to 1964 under the direction of Auguste Perret, who had been at the center of heated debates ever since the beginning of the twentieth century because of his avant-garde use of materials like cement for the Champs-Elysée Theater. Perret had equally bold ideas for a modern city complex covering 133 hectares at Le Havre. His layout featured openness and a rigorous structure that integrated the city’s cultural heritage. This complex was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2005.
