Located in a strategic position between the Gave de Pau and the Hédas, the origins of the fortifications of the castle, built to control the passage of goods and people, date back to the 11th century and are seen today in the Mazère tower. In the late 14th century, Count Gaston Fébus turned the castle into a citadel (the Fébus Dungeon standing at 33 meters high still remains). The building was continuously modified until the end of the 19th century and gardens were added, as it was now the home of kings. After the Revolution, the architecture of the palace was maintained: the doors were restored, a tower and a portico were built. This huge monument retains signs of its past changes and is a must if you are visiting the town.
