Popes Benoit XII and Clément VI commissioned the construction of the Papal Palace, "the most beautiful and strongest house in the world" (Jean Froissart), which remains the largest fortress built in the Middle Ages. From the 15th century the palace was the residence of legates and vice legates, after which it became a barracks until 1906; it has since known significant restorations. For students in artistic fields, the Palais des Papes is a gemstone in terms of architecture and 14th century paintings, in particular thanks to the works of Pierre Poisson and Jean de Louvres, and the magnificent frescoes of Matteo Giovanetti.
