Jean Delacour, ornithologist, undertook considerable renovation work on his property, which included a 14th-century manor and Renaissance-era castle, in order to house his rare bird and mammal collection gathered during his many assignments in tropical regions. In 1967, he left the museum these precious specimens and the grounds. In this exceptional setting, emus and rheas (birds that resemble ostriches in size) walk side by side with cranes, pheasants and doves. The Clères Zooological Park is especially focused on protecting endangered species, and does such a good job at it that hundreds of birds are born there each year.
