St. Stephen's Cathedral in Metz

The Saint-Etienne cathedral in Metz is a Flamboyant Gothic construction built in many stages between 1220 and 1550. It has a unique feature: the two towers that rise from its body are not aligned with the facade but with the 4th row. This was an inevitable result of adding to an older edifice… And yet this singular aspect does nothing to detract from the building's beauty as a whole.

This cathedral boasts the largest surface of polychromatic stained-glass artwork in the world (with 6 500m²). Within, this lighting adds a touch of pure magic; this helps to get a sense of the massive interior, with an exceptionally tall nave.
