The largest menhir, or standing stone, in the south-west of France lies on the Bordeaux wine route, its impressive silhouette (5.2 meters high and 3 meters wide) welcoming visitors to the château Saint-Jean, at the edge of the path that the pilgrims once took to Santiago de Compostela.Mentioned in official documents from the 13th century under the name "Petra-Fixa", the menhir Pierreffite seems to have been erected around 2600-2300 BC.
