TOURIST DESTINATION

The Menhir of Pierrefitte

The largest menhir, or standing stone, in the south-west of France lies on the Bordeaux wine route, its impressive silhouette (5.2 meters high and 3 meters wide) welcoming visitors to the château Saint-Jean, at the edge of the path that the pilgrims once took to Santiago de Compostela.

Mentioned in official documents from the 13th century under the name "Petra-Fixa", the menhir Pierreffite seems to have been erected around 2600-2300 BC. AD, like the covered walkways in the region.
This megalith was the subject of legends and religions throughout history as reflected in the "offering holes" which were drilled in the Middle Ages, and each year the solstice festival is still celebrated here.
