The Montenvers funicular railway, which started in 1909, bravely journeys from Chamonix up to the edge of the Mer de Glace glacier, one of the largest alpine glaciers and the largest glacier in France. It takes this little red train some 20 minutes to complete the 5 km journey and 871 metre ascent. At the terminus, visitors can admire the Mer de Glace glacier and the panoramic view of the Grandes Jorasses and the Drus below. Depending on the time of year, visitors can enter the ice grotto, carved straight out of the side of the glacier. They can also visit the Alpine animal museum and Montenvers museum. This is one visit that certainly won't leave you cold!
