Anecdote about Quimper
The city of Quimper has had many different names over the centuries. Before the French Revolution in 1789, the capital of Cornouaille had adopted the name of its first bishop and become Quimper-Corentin, or Kemper-Corentin. This helped set it apart from other towns in the area with similar names, like Quimperlé and Quemperven. During the Reign of Terror, any allusion to religion or the Church was erased. And so Quimper-Corentin became Montagne-sur-Odet.
