Montélimar is widely considered to be the world capital of nougat and the nougat produced here is said to be the best in the world. It has been home to many famous French names including Emile Loubet, president of France from 1699 till 1906, Formula One driver Charles Pic, and Louis de Freycinet, who was a navigator. The city has been inhabited by several rulers, all of whom have left their mark. The Romans built a forum, a thermae, aqueducts and a basilica. During the middle ages the Adhémar family ruled the city and built a grand castle, which stills watches over Montélimar to this day.

is situated in the Drôme department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the second biggest town in Drôme and if the delightful nougat doesn’t win you over the scent of lavender from the surrounding fields most definitely will. The market is vibrant, the locals are welcoming and the sun is always shining.

A two-day break
Montélimar is packed full of ornate buildings, beautiful countryside and historical sites, and in two days you will be able to see some of its many treats. Head up to the Adhémar castle that dominates the skyline and discover its beauty, which, despite its age, is remarkably well preserved. From the top of the castle the views across the city are amazing. Stroll through the tree-lined streets and visit the bustling and colourful market to buy some of that world famous nougat.

A week-long stay
Stay for a whole week and you can really explore Montélimar at your leisure. The Premiere Classe Hotel Montélimar is close to the town centre, making it the ideal base from which to discover Montélimar. The Natural History Museum is ideal for those wanting to discover Montelimar’s past. Inside you will find old coins, weapons and costumes. The former chapel in Montélimar has been fully renovated and is now a lively arts centre. Food lovers should visit the Museum of the Black Truffle and Tricastin, where you can learn about the truffle’s history and its uses as well as sample some Tricastin wine in the cellars.

A family holiday
Ganout is the Montélimar children’s mascot and he welcomes children of all ages. Visit the Candy and Nougat Palace and House of Toys to see how it is made and have a taste.

Lyon and Marseille airports are the closest to the city. Montélimar is easily accesible via the A7 from numerous places including Lyon, Lille and Arles. There are good train links into the city including the high speed TGV train service. There is also a reliable coach and bus service for travelling within the city and to the surrounding areas. Taxis are widely available. For those wanting to explore the city at their leisure, car hire is also convenient.

Le Sarrazin is a great place for breakfast or light lunch for those on a budget. Make sure you try the delicious crêpes.

There are events and festivals held in the city all year round. The Saturday market is a popular place to buy local produce such as lavender and nougat and to get a taste of everyday life in Montélimar. The yearly lavender festival is one of the best in the region and is usually held in July.

Interesting fact
When the city was under control of the Germanic Holy Roman Empire in 1032, the Adhémar de Monteil Family rose to power. They built the fleeting palace that dominates the skyline and gave the city its name.
