La Rochelle is een Franse stad, hoofdstad van het departement Charente Maritime. Deze pittoreske havenstad aan de Atlantische Oceaan ligt op ongeveer 180 km ten noorden van Bordeaux. De stad is met het eiland Île de Ré verbonden door een 2,9 kilometer lange brug die in 1988 werd voltooid. De haven ligt aan een zeestraat, de Pertuis d'Antioche. Er bevindt zich een universiteit in de stad, l'Université de La Rochelle, die de stad een kosmopolitisch karakter verleent.

Er wordt al melding gemaakt van La Rochelle in de 10e eeuw, toen het nog een klein vissersplaatsje was. Rochelle is het verkleinwoord van Roche (rots) vanwege zijn ligging op een rotsachtig platform. Vanaf de 12e eeuw begon de handel te bloeien met Groot Brittannië en Noord-Europa als belangrijkste handelspartners en zout, wijn en kabeljauw als belangrijkste handelswaar. In de 18e eeuw, op het hoogtepunt van de slavenhandel en daarmee de handel in suiker en koffie tussen de driehoek Afrika, Amerika en Europa was La Rochelle na Nantes de belangrijkste haven van Frankrijk. Dit duurde totdat de negeropstanden in Santo Domingo een einde maakten aan deze praktijken. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog bouwde de Duitse marine een basis van onderzeeërs. La Rochelle werd als laatste Franse stad bevrijd.

La Rochelle heeft de gebouwen van zijn rijke verleden goed weten te bewaren en is een van de meest pittoreske steden aan de Atlantische kust, wat zeer bevorderlijk is voor het toerisme. Dit kunt u zelf ervaren als u kiest voor een vakantie in Hotel Première Classe La Rochelle. Begint u bijvoorbeeld met de beroemde torens uit de 14e en 15e eeuw: la tour de la Chaîne, la tour de Saint Nicolas en la tour de la Lanterne. Bezoekt u ook de Cathédrale de Saint Louis. Er zijn veel musea in La Rochelle, waaronder het Musée d'Histoire naturelle, het Musée Orbigny-Bernon en het Musée du Nouveau-Monde.

Aan de zuidkant van de stad vindt u Les Minimes, de grootste haven voor plezierjachten van Europa. Hier vindt u ook het zeemuseum L'Aquarium. Het oude onderzoeksschip Calypso, ooit gebruikt als mobiel laboratorium voor oceaanonderzoek, is te zien in het Musée Maritime.

Als u vanuit het noorden met de auto naar La Rochelle wilt reizen, kunt u gebruik maken van de grote route naar Bordeaux en bij Niort verder reizen over de N11, die u rechtstreeks naar uw bestemming voert. Ook treinreizigers kunnen de stad makkelijk bereiken, want in de gemeente liggen de spoorwegstations La Rochelle-Ville en La Rochelle-Porte Dauphine, met verbindingen naar Bordeaux, Nantes, Poitiers, Parijs alsmede een aantal lokale bestemmingen. Er is ook een luchthaven, de Aéroport de La Rochelle-Île de Ré, momenteel de grootste luchthaven van de regio Poitou-Charentes. Eenmaal in de stad zelf kunt u gebruik maken van een systeem van fietsenverhuur (vgl. ons witte fietsenplan) dat sinds 1974 met succes functioneert.

In La Rochelle vindt iedere zomer gedurende een volle week een van de grootste muziekfestivals van Frankrijk plaats, de zogeheten "FrancoFolies".
