Monument

Saint Nicolas Tower

The iconic St. Nicolas Tower. Three majestic towers on the Old Port of La Rochelle bear witness to the city's maritime past. The Saint-Nicolas tower, erected in 1376, initially signaled the entrance to the port and controlled incoming ships. Transformed into a prison between the 16th and 18th centuries for Huguenots and foreign sailors, then into a royal residence, it is now open to visitors. Access to the vast halls is via a maze of winding staircases. Today, its imposing structure is slightly tilted, its foundations struggling to support it! Listed as a Historic monument in 1879, it is opposite the Chain Tower, where taxes and port entrance fees were collected. The Lantern Tower completes this architectural ensemble. Rising to a height of 246 ft, it is the highest of the three La Rochelle towers but also the oldest lighthouse on the entire Atlantic coast! Before returning to your Première Classe La Rochelle Center hotel, treat yourself to a refreshing drink on one of the terraces of the Old Port and enjoy the view of the pleasure boats, overlooked by the illuminated towers: a timeless spectacle

Port des Minimes of La Rochelle

The Port des Minimes, boat observatory. The Port des Minimes is the main marina in La Rochelle. It was created in 1972 and has four basins for a total of 4,500 berths. Before returning to your Première Classe La Rochelle hotel, take a leisurely stroll along the quai du Lazaret and enjoy the diversity of these boats, small wooden canoes or majestic sailing boats, which stretch nonchalantly across the port. With its nine miles of jetties, the Port des Minimes is one of the largest marinas in the world! You can then continue your escape to the Plage des Minimes, located in front of the port. An inviting place to laze around, where you can picnic with friends or lovers. After lunch, take a short relaxing stroll in the Parc des Minimes, a verdant expanse bordered by limestone cliffs. Its undulating landscape bears witness to the Second World War: when the garden was landscaped 1978, the blockhouses were covered with vegetation to conceal them. At the end of the day, head south! Admire a sunset from the Pointe des Minimes, a natural jetty in the ocean from where you can admire, the mystical lighthouse at the end of the world in the distance.

The La Rochelle Aquarium

The La Rochelle Aquarium, 20,000 leagues under the sea. The first tourist site in Charente-Maritime to obtain the TripAdvisor certificate of excellence in 2017, the Aquarium de La Rochelle, located in the heart of the city, welcomes you all year round with nearly 12,000 marine animals showcased in approximately three million liters of sea water! From your Première Classe La Rochelle Center hotel, head towards the large yacht basin and admire these amazing ships before taking the path to the aquarium. All the great oceans and seas are represented over a course of about two hours, with 83 basins that follow each other in a beautiful blue farandole. Species such as sharks, turtles or jellyfish enjoy their own highly specialized habitats. A tropical forest with palms, lianas, tree ferns and orchids it is home to a variety of strange animals such as mudskippers or piranhas. An educational stroll through the aquariums, each of which is equipped with complete descriptions to help you learn more about our aquatic friends. A series of temporary exhibitions completes the traditional tour. A poetic and entertaining stroll based on research carried out by the best scientists and oceanographers.

A strange tale about La Rochelle

You don’t often find a “lighthouse at the end of the world”. But you will if you head to the end of Minimes beach in La Rochelle. It is an exact replica of the one built in Patagonia in 1884 off the coast of Cape Horn that inspired Jules Verne to write his novel, “The Lighthouse at the End of the World”. Its double opened here in 2000. And you’re in luck! You’ll get to see this one during your stay in one of La Rochelle’s Première Classe hotels.
