La Grande-Motte

La Grande Motte: a city like no other. White pyramids everywhere. Seen from the sky, La Grande Motte stands out for the sharp and uniform peaks of its buildings, which titillate the imagination of the spectator. Space ships for some, pre-Columbian pyramids for others, these architectural anomalies are today the pride and main feature of the city. Built on virgin land in 1965 with the aim of developing the Languedoc-Roussillon coastline, it was the playground of Jean Balladur, a visionary architect who wanted to make it a place with a radical graphic identity. Mission accomplished: in 2010, the Ministry of Culture awarded the commune the 20th Century Heritage label. But the aesthetic concept does not stop there. In La Grande Motte, design is a way of life that includes the four miles of beach and the many public gardens. 70% of the town is made up of green spaces, a fact which it is proud of, and it has developed a unique landscape architecture, combining modernity and nature. Discover this extraordinary place less than 20 minutes’ drive from your Première Classe Montpellier Est - Parc Expositions - Aéroport hotel, along the Etang de l'Or. Don't forget your camera: if there are cities that are works of art in their own right, La Grande Motte is one of them.

Palavas-les-Flots

Palavas-les-Flots, a seaside resort where there is much more than just the sea. From your Première Classe Montpellier Est - Parc Expositions - Airport hotel, head directly south for about six miles. Then follow the tongue of the sea, where you can admire the lagoon and wild landscapes. You have arrived: Palavas-les-Flots. Surrounded by the river Lez and the Gulf of Lion, this seaside resort has gradually established itself as a major tourist destination in the Mediterranean region. Inhabited since the 18th century by fishing communities (who appreciated the rarity of its fauna), the village has since succeeded in merging tradition and modernity. You will still be able to enjoy the waltz of the fishing boats which supply the local restaurants and markets with the freshest fish at the landing stage. Take the time to wander around in the early morning: the freshness of the wet stalls and the cries of the seagulls are the most invigorating wake-up calls. This will give you the energy you need to discover the other facets of this city, which also seduces you with its nightlife. Always lively, always celebrating, Palavas-les-Flots is today a meeting point popular with young people and families who refuse to choose between rest and celebration, between sporting or relaxing vacations.

Aquarium Mare Nostrum

Dive into the Mare Nostrum aquarium. Get ready for a totally immersive marine experience in Aquarium Mare Nostrum, located in the Odysseum district of Montpellier. A fun and instructive dive awaits you not far from your Première Classe Montpellier Sud Lattes hotel. And with good reason, you are about to meet around 400 species during a two-hour visit. Inaugurated in 2007, Aquarium Mare Nostrum takes you on a journey through all the waters of the world thanks to a sophisticated setting. Polynesia, the Mediterranean, South Africa, Amazonia. The tanks are full of surprises. Indeed, thanks to the numerous restorations and sceneries, the animals seem to have evolved in their natural environment. Admire rare animals such as the giant Pacific octopus or the butterfly fish. Awaken your scientific spirit by taking part in the storm and underwater exploration simulator. During school periods, the aquarium organizes activities that will allow you to observe the animals in their natural environment. Feeding penguins, sharks and lagoon animals are memorable encounters with wildlife. A celestial mirror of these populated waters, the Galilee planetarium offers you a unique concept that will reveal the secrets of the universe. Film screenings and permanent exhibitions will allow you to learn more about the cosmos.

TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Montpellier?

A two-day city break in Montpellier
Week-long visit to Montpellier
Family stay in Montpellier
A weekend in Montpellier is the perfect time to soak up its unique atmosphere. After getting yourself settled in your hotel room, wander the medieval streets of the Écusson neighborhood, linger a while in the Place de la Comédie, and take some time to admire the city’s modern architecture, designed by top architects. Take in the Arc de Triomphe, an iconic landmark looking out over the Promenade du Peyrou. From the heights of the park you’ll get to enjoy some stunning views across Montpellier. Time for some culture? Head to the Fabre Museum to see a vast collection of French paintings. Or maybe you’d rather get back to nature? The botanical garden is the place for you.
Whether you’re in Montpellier for business or pleasure, a week’s stay is the perfect amount of time to explore the thousand-year-old city and delve deeper into the surrounding area. Save some time to check out the city’s modern neighborhoods, too: the neoclassical architecture of Antigone will amaze you, as will the quirky, stylish buildings of Port Marianne. If you’re staying at a Première Classe hotel in Montpellier over the summer, there are some fantastic seaside resorts nearby: La Grande Motte, Palavas-les-Flots and Sète. The superb scenery of the Camargue, the Hérault Gorges, and Salagou Lake are also worth a visit.
Of all the feelings you’ll experience during a family stay in Montpellier, boredom is definitely not one! In the summer, make the most of the seaside to swim, picnic, or just chill out. On the way to the beach, stop off at the Réserve du Méjean in Lattes, a preserve squeezed between land and sea with a wealth of plant and wildlife that will knock your socks off. There’s the archaeological site for the ancient city of Lattara not far away too, along with the Henri Prades museum. To make sure the whole family enjoys a comfortable vacation, we offer a range of services at Première Classe hotels including breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi access.

Culinary specialities to discover in Montpellier

Your exploration of Montpellier will only be complete after you’ve gone gourmet and investigated the local cuisine. After breakfast in the hotel, head to the city’s restaurants to sample some of its local culinary specialties. Try the Petits Pâtés de Pézenas, bite-sized pies stuffed with lamb and kidneys. Lemon zest and a pinch of brown sugar subtly lift the little morsels to a whole new level. A tielle sétoise — a small pie filled with octopus — is a must-try, too, as is macaronade, where meat and pasta are combined in a delicious tomato sauce. When it’s time for something sweet, give in to the temptation of the Grisettes de Montpellier and Berlingots de Pézenas.

Montpellier's must-see festivals

There’s no doubt about it: Montpellier positively fizzes with culture. Your stay in a Première Classe hotel, whether for work or play, is the perfect chance to enjoy it. The city is home to some of the biggest festivals around, like Printemps des Comédiens, Montpellier Danse, and Cinemed (a Mediterranean film festival) — whether you’re into stage, screen or dance, you’ll find something for you. As for more off-beat events, there’s the French Battle of the Year in October: a hip-hop and breakdance event where some of the best teams around go head-to-head.

A significant fact about the history of Montpellier

Although Montpellier’s Beaux-Arts neighborhood is now known for its vibrancy and charm, that hasn’t always been the case. Where the Place des Beaux-Arts now stands was once a site for slaughterhouses, built in 1851, that provided work for the entire neighborhood for decades. The butchering stopped in the Seventies, and the slaughterhouses demolished in 1985. Nowadays, the area has a more “boho” reputation, especially since the Art Café opened, and a fairly unique village feel reigns. Not ready for your adventure in Hérault to end? You’ll also find affordable Première Classe hotels in Béziers and Sète.
