Strange fact about Calais

Discover Calais’ history. Notably during the Hundred Years War when King Edward III besieged the town for 11 months and agreed to spare the people on condition that they gave him six bourgeois to execute. When the bourgeois arrived, his wife, Philippa de Hainaut, begged her husband to spare them, which he did. This famous episode inspired Rodin’s statute of the Bourgeois of Calais. Visit Calais for a weekend or a stay. Remember to book your Première Classe hotel room as well as your all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.
