Did you know?
Legend has it that Maubeuge was founded in 661 by St. Aldegonde. Daughter of a Merovingian noble, she fled her parents’ home in Cousolre to escape marriage. She sought refuge in a wood on the banks of the Sambre, where she set up an oratory. She later had a monastery built, where she stayed until her death in 684. This monastery would go on to be the birthplace of the city of Maubege.
