Compiègne still resounds to the song of its Carmelite nuns on their way to execution in 1794. These cloistered nuns were expelled from the convent in 1792 when the revolutionary authorities seized the property of the church. They were sentenced to death in 1794 for having plotted against the Revolution. All sang hymns on their way to the guillotine.
