Discover Laon with your family
Enjoying a weekend in Laon? Take stroll through the heights of the old medieval city to explore the wonders of its architectural heritage. The stunning Gothic Notre Dame cathedral, which inspired counterparts in Reims and Chartres, is an absolute must-see. Climb all the way to the top, and you’ll be rewarded with breath-taking views across the city. Once back on terra firma, get your fill of the city’s heritage with a trip to the Hôtel-Dieu — now home to the local tourism office — the Chappelle des Templiers and a walk along the city walls. Enjoy great accommodation at low prices during your stay with our Première Classe hotels.
Spending a week’s stay in Laon for a business trip or vacation? Take some time out to see its abbeys — the Abbey of St. Vincent, Saint-Jean or Saint-Martin — monuments harking back to the city’s medieval past. Visit the underground passageways of the Citadel to unearth the city’s secrets and trace its history and geological past. Are you keen to stay longer in Aisne to keep exploring the region? Book a room in one of our affordable Première Classe hotels in Saint-Quentin or Soissons.
Enjoying a family stay in our Première Classe hotel in Laon? The city is home to Happy Loup, a play area specially for kids. With ball pits, slides, racetracks and toboggan runs on offer, they’ll be slipping and sliding like wild things. Around seven miles to the south of Laon, the Lac d’Aillete Centre Parcs resort is the perfect place for a fun family day out. The department of Aisne is also castle territory, so why not take a trip to the Château de Coucy, a majestic fortress high on the headland above where the Oise and the Ailette rivers meet.

An interesting fact about Laon

Jean-Paul Sartre spent a year teaching at the Lycée de Laon from 1936 to 1937. The philosophy teacher, who graduated as a university professor in 1929, is said to have taken classes outside, with no notes and no tie (which was a bit of a shock at the time). He started writing and publishing papers on philosophy while in Laon, but had yet to make a name for himself. Sartre spoke of Laon in many of his letters to Simone de Beauvoir. He also described the medieval city’s ramparts in the first volume of The Roads to Freedom. Discover all the city’s secrets for yourself with a stay in its Première Classe hotel.
