Bourges is a city on the Yevre river located in the Centre-Val de Loire region in central France. It is the capital of the Cher department and was also the capital of the former province of Berry. The inhabitants of Bourges are called Berruyers and number 71,000, while their motto is ‘Summa Imperii Penes Bituriges’ – supreme power is in the hands of the Bituriges.

Following the siege of Avaricum in the winter of 52 BC, Julius Caesar's forces destroyed the city and killed all but 800 of its inhabitants. The city was reconstructed as a Roman city, with a monumental gate, aqueducts, thermae and an amphitheatre, reaching a greater size than it would attain during the Middle Ages. During the 8th century Bourges lay on the northern fringes of the Duchy of Aquitaine and was therefore the first town to come under Frankish attacks when they crossed the Loire. It was captured by in 731 but immediately reconquered by the duke Odo the Great. During the Middle Ages, Bourges was the capital of a Viscounty until the 14th century. In 1438, Charles VII decreed the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges.

A one-week break
A week is the perfect amount of time to get to know both the city of Bourges as well as the region of Centre Val de Loire. The Marais, to the north of historic centre, is an area of allotment gardens divided by canals, that makes for a beautiful stroll. In the surrounding region why not discover why the Loire river is known as the royal river and take the famous Briare canal boat down it. Further more, why not take a tour of the Loire Valley, which will have plenty to keep you busy, from chateaus to vineyards.

A family holiday

Bourges is a great place to take the whole family! Whether you take a boat trip around the Marais, visit the artificial lake of Plan d’eau – the perfect spot for a bike ride – or are attending one of the city’s many fantastic markets there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Bourges is served by Bourges Airport, a small regional airport located 3km southwest of the city, which offers flights to and from the UK. The railway station, Gare de Bourges, offers direct connections to such regional destinations as Paris, Orleans, Tours and Lyon. If you happen to be driving then the A71 motorway connects Bourges with Orleans and Clermont-Ferrand.

The Centre Val de Loire region of France is a heaven for lovers of French country food offering rich products from the soil but also delicious traditional dishes. ‘Andouillettes’, a firm favourite in the region, are French pork sausages cooked with Vouvray wine.
