Tours is located on the lower reaches of the Loire river, between Orleans and the Atlantic coast. It is the largest city in the Centre region, in the northwest of France, although it is not the regional capital. Situated at the heart of a European communication network, Tours is one of the major centres of France.

Tours dates its history back to an origin as a Roman settlement - the Gauls called it ‘Turones’. A fourth century Bishop of Tours, St. Martin, developed a posthumous cult following that made the city a magnet for pilgrims, a development that would work to bring Tours much religious renown as well as economic prosperity. By the 1400’s, the town was acting as an unofficial royal seat of power for the likes of Charles VII, Louis XI, Charles VIII, and Louis XII. Silk trade brought about further commercial, and therefore cultural, exchange, the latter ultimately resulting in the stunning architectural and artistic developments that took place in the city from the Late Middle Ages and French Renaissance onwards.

A two-day trip
Two days is just enough time to get to know the city of Tours. Premiere Classe Tours Nord – Parcay Hotel and Premiere Classe Tours Sud – Chambray les Tours Hotel are just a short walk from the city centre while Premiere Classe Tours Sud – Joue les Tours Hotel is just a short taxi ride. Your first destination should be the stunning Saint Gatien Cathedral – with all its history you won't be left disappointed. Why not follow this up with a visit to the excellent Museum of Fine Arts of Tours which offers a rich and varied collection. For your second day you could relax in the Chateau de Valmer before visiting the medieval Priory of Saint Cosme.

A one-week break
A full week is a perfect amount of time to get the most out of your visit to Tours and the surrounding Centre Val de Loire region. Tours is famous for having 30 different markets so you won't be short of things to buy, while there is also the Tours botanical garden to chill in and Point Wilson to visit. Discover why the Loire river is known as the royal river and take the famous Briare canal boat down it. And then why not take a tour of the Loire Valley, which will have plenty to keep you busy, from chateaus to vineyards.

A family holiday
Tours is a fantastic place to take the whole family! Whether it is visiting the La Recreation theme park, the Aquarium du Val de Loire or one of the city’s three cinemas there will be something for everyone!

Transport
Tours is served by Tours Val de Loire Airport which connects the Loire valley to London and Dublin. National connections to the likes of Corsica and Marseille are also available. The city also has two train stations that are on one of the main lines on the TGV meaning Bordeaux, Lyon, Strasbourg, Lille and Paris can all be reached in a relatively small time. Gare de Tours is the central station and Gare de Saint-Pierre-des-Corps is just outside the city centre. Tours is situated at the centre of a highway crossroads: the A10 heads to Paris or Bordeaux, the A85 to Nantes and Bourges and the A28 to Le Mans. A bus system serves the city with the main central stop being Jean Jaures. There is set to be a tram system put in place by September 2013. Stay at the Premiere Classe Tours Nord – Parcay Hotel to be close to all the action.

Gastronomy
The Centre Val de Loire region of France is a heaven for lovers of French country food offering rich products from the soil but also delicious traditional dishes. ‘Andouillettes’, a firm favourite in the region, are French pork sausages cooked with Vouvray wine. Other classics from the region include ‘Rillettes’ (a pork pate), ‘Crottin de Chavignol’ (goat cheese) and ‘tarte tatin’ (French apple pie). The region surrounding Tours is also renowned for its wine.

Events
The Centre Val de Loire region boasts an eclectic mix of events to attend throughout the year. The Naturalies de Dreux each April allows over 40 exhibitors to showcase flowers and plants to wow garden lovers while the Festival des jeux de l’esprit in October is a haven for board game lovers, allowing players to play against each other. Another favourite is the Festival Cornegidouille V'la les artistes – the perfect place for a feast of puppet shows and circus tricks.

Interesting fact
The French spoken in Tours is alleged by some to be that of perfection.
