Chantilly is a regal horseracing town owing to its racecourse and stables. It is a small city situated in the Picardy region, in northern France. Chantilly has also been twinned with the English racing town of Epsom since 1995.

Chantilly started out with only a chateau. In 1673, Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, known as le Grand Condé, constructed a street called Gouvieux. The street was lined with guesthouses and lodgings for workers from the chateau, and held workshops for its artists. This forged the beginnings of Chantilly. With the construction of the stables and the beginnings of industries such as lace-making and porcelain, the town grew quickly. The Scottish reformer Thomas Muir sought refuge in Chantilly in 1798 after fleeing Britain. He died as a result of old wounds less than 3 months after arriving. Today, Chantilly is a bustling city and a popular tourist destination.

A two-day break
Two days is enough time to see most of the reasons Chantilly is so popular. Even if you’re not a gambler, Chantilly Racecourse is a must-see, if only because of its history. It has been there since the late 1800s and is a huge part of the culture here. It also houses the Living Horse Museum and the Grand stables. Be sure to take a stroll down to the Nonette River in Chantilly centre. While you are there, visit the 17th century Manse Pavillion. This beautiful building houses a hydraulic machine that pumps water to the fountains, basins and waterfalls in the chateau’s park.

A week-long stay
With a whole week you will have time to see all the attractions. The Premiere Classe Hotel Chantilly Sud - Luzarches is ideally situated for exploring the nearby Chantilly Forest, which covers 6,300 hectares. The dense forest’s inhabitants include numerous species of plant, wild boar, deer and doe. Château de Chantilly is an opulent palace that has been built over several centuries. The lavish gardens are adorned with flowers and fountains and inside the chateau you will find one of the best art galleries in France, Musée Condé.

A family holiday
Part of the parkland at the chateau, Potager des Princes is a beautiful area with rabbits, goats, chickens and ducks. It is dotted with pretty bridges and decorative fountains.

The nearest airport to Chantilly is Charles de Gaulle in Paris. This is around 25km from Chantilly and is accessible by train or via the A1. The A1 also connects Lille and Senlis to the city. Once in Chantilly you can get around using the train, bus service or by taxis.

As a city built and resided in by royalty, you can be sure to find food here that is fit for a king. For authentic cuisine, visit La Ferme de Condé and try the smoke salmon. If you would prefer Italian food, visit La Prego for delicious pizzas, lovely surroundings and excellent service.

Once a year in May, Chantilly Farm hosts the Bluegrass and BBQ festival. The event features an award-winning barbecue, music, dancing, an antique tractor show, kite-flying and numerous children’s activities.

Interesting fact
is famous for its lace, which it has produced since the 17th century when the Duchesse de Longueville organised its production.
