Chambery is a picturesque city nestled neatly between the French Alps in the department of Savoie in the Rhône-Alpes region
It is the capital of Savoie and has been the capital of the historical Savoy region since the 13th century. Chambery is an historical city with impressive buildings and elaborate fortifications. These days the Château of the Dukes of Savoie, which was once home to royalty, is now open to the public for visits and tours.

Chambery was originally called Lemencum but changed its name several times during the middle ages and only became Chamberi in 1603. It is a beautiful city adorned with elaborate architecture and impressive monuments. Visitors of all ages will marvel at the splendour of the castle and the quirky elephant fountain. The city is the gateway to some of the best ski resorts in the French Alps and is home to hundreds of beautiful vineyards.

A two-day break
A two day break will give you just enough time to discover what makes this scenic city so charming. From the winding pebbled streets to the quaint courtyards and the flower-adorned gardens, there is plenty to see. Be sure to visit Le Chateau des Ducs de Savoie which dates back to 1232, take a tour around it by day and see it lit up in all its glory at night along with the rest of the city.

A week-long stay
With a whole week you can explore Chambery at your leisure. Take in the fresh mountain air and stroll through the charming streets. Take a trip to the vineyards and sample the city’s famous wine. Nature lovers will adore the unspoilt and little known Bauges National Park. The beautiful spa resort of Aix-Les-Bains is only a short journey away and is well worth a visit. As a city adorned with lakes there are some delightful fish dishes to be had in Chambery. Le St-Real serves exceptional and exquisitely-priced cuisine. If you are on a budget visit Le Tonneau for an equally delicious, but cheaper, alternative.

Festivals and events are held all year round in Chambery. The Chambery Comic Strip Festival is held in October. The event features visiting authors who hold book signings, children’s workshops and exhibitions. In September there is a huge flea market in the centre of Chambery with more than 2750 stalls selling everything from crockery to furniture. Foodies will love the Salon Saveurs et Terroirs, which showcases some of the best local produce. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of culinary treats from some of the country’s best chefs and caterers.
