Valence is situated in Charente in the Poitou Charentes region It is the capital of the Drome department and overlooks the river Rhone. It is a tranquil city nestled beneath the picturesque Alps. With many vineyards in close proximity it is the perfect base from which to explore the region. Whether you are on a business trip or a weekend break, Valence is an ideal destination. The city’s extensive and varied history is reflected in its ornate architecture and beautiful sculptures.

The architecture in this scenic city is as much a part of Valence's character as the lush mountains that provide the backdrop. The city is just an hour away from Lyon and Grenoble. Valence’s nightlife is surprisingly quiet. However, it is home to a restaurant with 3 Michelin stars, countless cafés and boutiques and an impressive Roman cathedral. Let the Premiere Classe Valence Sud hotel be your host for a relaxing stay.

A two-day break
Two days will give you the chance to explore the magical medieval streets. The first day could be spent discovering the Valence Old Town; visit the Maison de Tetes, an elaborate 16th century house decorated inside and out with sculptures including impressive Ancient Greek heads. On your last day, visit the nearby St Appolinnaire, a Roman cathedral, with its unique features and memorial monument dedicated to Canon Mistral.

A week-long stay
An entire week is ample time to discover Valence. The marina here is well worth a visit and is very picturesque. There’s also a lovely botanical path which nature lovers will appreciate. For lunch, head to the nearest bakery and ask for ‘The Swiss,’ a sweet orange flavoured pastry made in the shape of a Swiss guard. It commemorates their role as guardians of the remains of Pope Pious VI during the 1800s. Finish the week with a trip to the nearby quaint cafes. The Fine Art Museum of Valence, situated in the old Bishop's Palace, has a fantastic collection of drawings by Hubert Robert.

A family holiday
Valence has plenty of facilities for children. Take them to the famous bandstand and Parc Jouvet and enjoy a picnic before playing hide and seek amongst the trees and taking and admiring the foundations and canals.

Angouleme Airport is the closest airport to Valence and is 18km away. It’s around 3 hours from Paris on the TGV and can be reached via the A7 and A9 motorways and the N7. There is a rail service within the town that covers most surrounding places including Lyon, Grenoble and Avignon, as well as the local area. Valence also has a long-term bike hire scheme and both a bus and taxi service.

Valence is home to The Maison Pic, an exquisite restaurant, situated within a luxury hotel, which boasts 3 Michelin stars and is run by the famous chef, Anne Sophie Pic. She is the only female Chef with 3 Michelin stars. If you’re on a budget visit her bistro, Le 7, an equally delicious eatery.

There are several festivals held in Valence throughout the year. "Seeing the light" is a festival that celebrates light and images throughout December. The Chocolate and Sweet Fair held in January will be a hot favourite with chocolate lovers of all ages and the Irish Celtic Show with its talented performers is the perfect place to have fun in the run up to Christmas.

Interesting fact
During the 1700s Pope Pious VI was exiled to Valence after rejecting the new way the Catholic Church was being run in France. His heart is in a marble cenotaph inside the cathedral.
