Futuroscope is a theme park located 10 kilometres north of Poitiers, in the department of Vienne in South-West France. Since opening in 1987, it has become one of the country’s most popular tourist venues. The theme park uses multimedia and audio-visual technology to create thrilling attractions and interactive experiences that are full of special effects, whether it be flying through space or running through a small French village.

As well as technological attractions and shows, Futuroscope is also well known for its stunning architecture, the pavilions where the rides are housed being made mostly from glass and metal, adding to the futuristic feel. Most of the films and exhibits are in French, although there are headphones with commentaries in other languages, including English. The 60 hectare site also includes many restaurants and shops so that visitors can make the most of their trip.

A two-day break:

With so much to see, a two-day stay is perfect for a trip to Futuroscope, especially from the base of Premiere Classe Poitiers Futuroscope - Chasseneuil Hotel. Head to some of the main attractions such as ‘Journey into the Dark’, where you are led by a blind person into darkness and forced to rely on your other senses to guide you. Once it gets dark, watch the evening show around the fountains which also includes many special effects including lasers and fireworks.

A week-long stay:

Staying for a week means the area around the theme park can also be discovered, with Premiere Classe Poitiers Futuroscope-Chasseneuil Hotel ideally located close to the A10. Poitiers, the capital of the Poitou-Charentes region is a beautiful town with a rich history that is waiting to be explored. The Notre-Dame-la-Grande is a magnificent Romanesque church that is well worth a visit, as is the The Baptistère Saint-Jean, apparently the oldest church in the whole of France.

A family holiday:

There is hardly a more perfect family trip than Futuroscope, with attractions suitable for children and adults alike. As there are very few height restrictions, all will be entertained by what the park has to offer. For a trip out, another fun day can be enjoyed at the open-air monkey park of La Vallee des Singes, south of Poitiers, where more than 300 monkeys wander around the valley and very close to the visitors.

The theme park is easily accessible from Poitiers airport, as well as from regular shuttle busses from the city centre. Alternatively, take the Eurostar to Lille and then go directly on the TGV line to Futuroscope-TGV station. It is also 2 minutes drive from exit 28 on the A10 motorway, with the Premiere Classe Poitiers Futuroscope-Chasseneuil Hotel located right next to this.

The park is full of green spaces so taking your own picnic is one option. There are also many restaurants to choose from, from all you can eat buffets, fast-food venues and upmarket diners which offer futuristic food to match the surroundings.

This year is the park's 25th anniversary, which they are celebrating by putting together an even more spectacular show than usual. Exclusive to 2012 is the People of the Future attraction, where a number of time travellers from the year 2112 will come to put on a show which will leave you wondering what exactly the future will bring!

Interesting fact:

It is not just the park full of young people that gives the area a youthful feel; it is said that the area has more students per inhabitant than any other city in France. One out of three people is under the age of 30, with one out of four a student.
