Lille, the capital of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in northern France, sits upon the Deûle River, near the country’s border with Belgium. In recent decades this industrial metropolis, whose economy was based on declining technologies, has transformed into a self-confident, commercial and cultural hub. Head to the Musée d’Histoire Naturelle for an entertaining and educational experience, and the free Parc Zoologique is one of France’s best. Following that, head to Citadelle park, complete with merry-go-rounds and the picturesque Bois de Boulogne. Why not take a picnic along with you. Transport
Lille has a mixed-mode public transport system, which is considered one of the most advanced in France. Gastronomy
Lille’s hearty dishes are the result of its rural surroundings and Flemish and French influence combined. Interesting fact
Lille and its region are known for its mussels and fries as a staple food. A tradition has been established whereby during the Braderie, restaurants throw empty mussel shells from people's finished dishes onto the street, allowing them to pile up. The restaurants compete for the biggest pile to determine who had the most customers.
