Lille, the capital of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in northern France, sits upon the Deûle River, near the country’s border with Belgium. In recent decades this industrial metropolis, whose economy was based on declining technologies, has transformed into a self-confident, commercial and cultural hub. A pretty old-town, a thriving nightlife scene and great shopping all contribute to the Lillois' pride in their reputation.
With its name having first appeared in 1066, Lille has strong historical roots. Today, with 36% of its population under 25, it is a vibrant and young city. In 2004 the city was made European Capital of Culture and City of Art and History. A triangle has been established between Paris, London and Brussels, thanks to the construction of the Eurostar, making a Premiere Classe hotel a good destination for a business trip.
A two-day break
Lille has a range of architectural styles with varying amounts of Flemish influence, making the city a unique transitional area between France and neighbouring Belgium. Spend some time soaking these features up. The first day could be spent admiring the unique cathedral, established in 1854 as an imposing basilica for the Virgin Mary, and the citadel. In the evening head to Network Café for a dance. Spend the second day at the Fine Arts Museum.
A week-long stay:
Visit the Maison Natale de Charles de Gaulle – a museum where the famous French leader was born. Café Le Relax is a great, ungentrified neighborhood café, perfect for an espresso or a strong Belgian beer. La Piscine Musée d'Art et d'Industrie offers a quirky experience: an art deco municipal swimming pool-turned-innovation-museum. On a sunny day, relax in one of the many beautiful gardens, such as the Jardin botanique de la Faculté de Pharmacie.
A family holiday
It’s easy to navigate Lille’s compact centre and pedestrianised streets, making it an immediately family-friendly city. Head to the Musée d’Histoire Naturelle for an entertaining and educational experience, and the free Parc Zoologique is one of France’s best. Following that, head to Citadelle park, complete with merry-go-rounds and the picturesque Bois de Boulogne. Why not take a picnic along with you. The Premiere Classe Lille Nord – Tourcoing hotel is located conveniently near Parc Walibi, an amusement park in Belgium.
Transport
Lille has a mixed-mode public transport system, which is considered one of the most advanced in France. It comprises buses, trams and a driverless metro system, making it incredibly straightforward to get around. It lies on the Eurostar line to London, has a TGV line direct to Paris and is served by Lille Lesquin International Airport.
Gastronomy
Lille’s hearty dishes are the result of its rural surroundings and Flemish and French influence combined. Among its specialities is Carbonnade flamande which comprises small chunks of beef stewed in beer. Restaurants can be found in the Premiere Classe Lille Ouest – Lomme hotel, Premiere Classe Lille Sud – Seclin hotel and Premiere Classe Lille Nord – Roncq hotel.
Events
During the first week of September every year, the Braderie, Europe’s biggest flea market, is held. Through Lille 3000, every two years the city focuses on a particular part of the world and celebrates it for a year. The events include special film screenings and political debates. The annual month-long Christmas market is the largest in northern France.
Interesting fact
Lille and its region are known for its mussels and fries as a staple food. A tradition has been established whereby during the Braderie, restaurants throw empty mussel shells from people's finished dishes onto the street, allowing them to pile up. The restaurants compete for the biggest pile to determine who had the most customers.
