TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Orléans?

Two-day trip to Orléans
Week-long visit to Orléans
Family trip to Orléans
During your stay in Orléans, make a date with the city and its centuries of heritage. Drop your things in your hotel room, and head out to take in some of history’s greatest tales: Joan of Arc saving Orléans from the English, the coronation of Louis VI of France in Orléans Cathedral, and more. As you walk, you’ll also spot traces of the Gallo-Roman city walls, like the Tour Blanche. The many private mansions and churches are worth a peek, too.

If you’re planning a week in Orléans, savor each and every encounter you have with its heritage. Take the time to stroll down the streets and through the Place du Martroi, to explore Hotel Groslot — the home of city hall — and the former Benedictine monastery which now houses the prefecture’s administrative offices. Not forgetting the cathedral, the former bishop’s residence and the Museum of Fine Arts for a touch of artistry. And the cherry on the cake: a couple of breaks to sample the region’s gourmet gastronomy during your stay. Keen to explore more of the region? Book a room in one of our affordable Première Classe hotels in Centre-Val de Loire.

A weekend or full week away with the family is perfect for having some fun and exploring Orléans. The kids will get to investigate every nook and cranny of all the top spots. Then the rides, games and a miniature steam train in Parc Pasteur will send them wild with excitement. This pit stop in the great outdoors is the perfect chance for a breath of fresh air after checking out what’s on offer in the city’s old town. If it’s entertainment you’re after, Orléans has cinemas, pools, bowling alleys and more. Or perhaps you’d like to make the most of how close you are to Paris? An exciting day out in the capital is easy to organize from the comfort of your hotel.

A short tour of Orléans' culinary specialities

Visitors to Orléans are always pleasantly surprised at how delicious the local specialties are. During your trip, start your day of indulgence with the hearty breakfast served at your Première Classe hotel. Then…give in to temptation. Visitors with a sweet tooth are going to love Cotignac d'Orléans, a sweetmeat similar to quince paste, and Macarons aux Fruits d'Orléans. Vinegar is another Orléans specialty. Wine being transported through the Loire, and therefore passing through the city, sometimes used to turn sour during the journey. When it did, the barrels were left in Orléans — and so the vinegar trade was born.

Unmissable events in Orléans

Once you’re out of your hotel room, you’ll find your Orléans experience shaped by the city’s festivities. One of the most popular is the Fêtes Johanniques in May, celebrating Joan of Arc with events, concerts, parades and more. The summer months are also full of life, with a huge street market in July and the Fête de la Saint-Fiacre in August — perfect for any keen gardener. The biennial Loire Festival offers visitors performances that represent the local area of the Loire. Meanwhile, Orléans'jazz in June and the Festival de Travers in November are a treat for the eyes and ears of any music lover.

Anecdote about Orléans

Did you know that Orléans was the fourth city in France to have its own university? Following Paris, Toulouse and Montpellier, the University of Orléans was established on January 27, 1306. Founded by Pope Clément V, the University of Orléans specialized in civil and Roman law. It remained the leading authority on law instruction for centuries, and produced many famous alumni: Protestant theorist Jean Calvin, Humanist writer Étienne de La Boétie, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin — also known as Molière — Charles Perrault and Jean de La Bruyère.
