Just fifteen minutes from your hotel is Crécy-la-Chapelle, an olde-worlde village with all the charm of yesteryear and a huge inspiration to many 19th-century painters. Meaux’s religious heritage has made its mark on the town, with no less than three bishops. In the 7th century, St. Fiacre — an Irish monk — found himself near Meaux. He founded a monastery with a large kitchen garden, which would lead to him becoming the patron saint of gardeners. Next was Guillaume Briçonnet, Bishop of Meaux in the 16th century, who was established as a precursor to the Protestant Reformation. Last came Bossuet in the 17th century, who was renowned for his eloquent sermons and eulogies.
