TRAVEL GUIDE

What to do in Agen?

A two-day visit to Agen
What to do in Agen for a week?
Family vacation
It is possible to explore the city of Agen during a weekend or a short stay. Starting from the room of your Première Classe hotel, head to the canal bridge over the Garonne River, where you can walk or take a small barge. You can also take a stroll to the city center to admire its oldest buildings, such as rue Beauville. Then visit the Saint-Caprais Cathedral, which has been rebuilt over the centuries. Finally, gourmets will head to the covered market to sample the local speciality, Agen prunes.
A lengthy stay at the Hotel Première Classe d'Agen will enable you to get to know the city and its treasures better. For instance, you should visit the renowned Museum of Fine Arts in Aquitaine which is home to five paintings by Goya. You can also visit the Jacobins church, a 13th century monument with temporary exhibitions. Then explore the area surrounding Agen and its charming villages, Astaffort, Moirax and its Romanesque priory and Puymirol. Continue to the château de Madaillan and further on to the château de Bonaguil, one of the most beautiful castles in France.
Located between Bordeaux and Toulouse, the tranquil Agenais region is brimming with green spaces, ideal for family activities. On the agenda for your vacations, picnic and walks in the Passeligne nature park, bike rides along the canal, and in the summer, swimming in the lakes of Saint-Chavit or Clarens. Finally, a must-see during a family stay in our cheap Première Classe hotel in Agen: the Walibi amusement park, located just a few minutes away. Entertainment and thrills guaranteed for young and old!

A gourmet stay based around the Agen prune

After a well-balanced breakfast in our Première Classe hotel, sample the local speciality, the Agen prune. It is a delicious fruit that comes in a variety of forms, ranging from sweet to savory: plain, chocolate-coated, creamy, in a tart or with Armagnac. Visiting the city is also an opportunity to experience the gastronomy of the south-west during a weekend or a gourmet stay in our hotels. You can choose from duck confit, foie gras and other specialities! And finally, tourtière, the region’s traditional dessert, which is a puff pastry tart with apples.

Unmissable events

Of course, it is around the prune that Agen organizes its biggest event: the "Pruneau Show". Gastronomy and wine tastings are on the agenda, as well as street arts and concerts by established artists. Scheduling a stay at the end of August in our Première Classe hotel accommodation will be an opportunity to participate in this great family event which is free. Every summer in August, Agen also dedicates a whole day to the celebration of its river, the Garonne. "Garonne en fête" organizes activities along the river in the city and in the surrounding communes.

Did you know?

Emblematic of Agen, the prune has much more distant origins. The first prune trees were brought back from China and planted by the Greeks and Romans in the Mediterranean basin. The latter also perfected techniques for drying the fruit. The modern-day Agen prune is the result of a marriage between the plum trees from China and plum trees brought back from Syria by Benedictine monks from the Lot valley in the 12th century. This new variety will be called prune d'Ente. Continue your southwestern getaway and discover our budget Première Classe hotels in Bordeaux and Toulouse.
