Gourmet vacation in Limoges

Limoges is a city that takes its food seriously: perfect for foodies looking for a gourmet stay. Once you’ve torn yourself away from your Première Classe hotel, you’ll get to enjoy all sorts of culinary specialties in the local restaurants. Potée limousine is one of them, as is the classic Limousin potato pie, or galetous: savory galettes that are often spread with rillettes. Save some room for dessert too: you’ll be hard-pressed to decide between massepain (an almond and egg white cookie), creusois (a butter and hazelnut cake) and of course, the fabulous clafoutis.

Did you know?

Limoges is also known as “The Red City”, or “the Rome of Socialism”, a nickname it got from its strong left-leaning political tendencies and working-class culture. In April 1848, the workers revolted against the election results and occupied the city for a whole month. It was at that time that socialist activist Pauline Roland first used the expression “the Rome of Socialism”. The Prefect of Haute-Vienne writes: “Limoges is quite possibly where socialism has the deepest roots in all of France”.
