Limoges is also known as “The Red City”, or “the Rome of Socialism”, a nickname it got from its strong left-leaning political tendencies and working-class culture. In April 1848, the workers revolted against the election results and occupied the city for a whole month. It was at that time that socialist activist Pauline Roland first used the expression “the Rome of Socialism”. The Prefect of Haute-Vienne writes: “Limoges is quite possibly where socialism has the deepest roots in all of France”.
