A gourmet stay in the Périgord

Your one-way ticket to foodie heaven starts with breakfast. The hearty wake-up call comes in the form of an all-you-can-eat buffet at your Première Classe hotel. Nouvelle-Aquitaine is famous for the hearty servings it dishes up of its culinary specialties. From foie gras to magret de canard and cous farcis, duck is definitely the star of the show here. It pairs perfectly with Sarlat potatoes, a great little Périgourd treat. Truffles and walnuts are also staples in many local recipes. Round off your gourmet tour of the city by washing everything down with local wine from the Domme, Bergerac, Monbazillac and Pécharmant estates.

The must-sees for your stay in Périgueux

Périgueux offers one of the best festival calendars around. Make the most of your trip by cramming in a whole host of events, especially musical ones. The Truffe d'Argent contest sniffs out the best singers, the Macadam Jazz festival pops up in city center venues for a series of concerts, Sinfonia celebrates Baroque music, and the Musique de la Nouvelle Orléans festival gets you tapping your toes to rhythms straight out of Louisiana. If you get the chance, then the Félibrée is a must: it’s an Occitanian folk festival that takes place in different towns and cities across the Périgord, within easy reach of your hotel.

Anecdote about Périgueux

General Pierre Yrieix Daumesnil, whose name graces a good number of French streets, was actually born in Périgueux. There’s a statue here in his honor, in Square... Daumesnil. The Périgueux native, who was a General during both the First French Empire and the Bourbon Restoration, saved Napoleon Bonaparte’s life twice during the 1799 campaigns. He lost his leg after he was injured in the Battle of Wagram, earning him the nickname ‘Jambe de Bois’ (‘Wooden Leg’). As a reward for his bravery, Daumesnil was named commander of the fortress of Vincennes. He died of cholera in 1832.
