A notable fact about La Roche-sur-Yon
Napoleon is a big part of La Roche-sur-Yon’s heritage, who set his sights on the village and made it into a prefecture in 1804. Although initially christened Napoléon, it would go on to have 8 different names in just 70 years, getting a new one every time there was a change of regime. With the Bourbon Restoration in 1814 it became Bourbon-Vendée, before reverting to its imperial name during the Hundred Days War. During the Second French Empire, it was known as Napoléon-Vendée.
