Located in Basque territory in France’s Aquitaine region, Biarritz is a luxurious seaside town, perfect for a break. Sitting in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, it is just 11 miles from the Spanish border. The town’s casino and beaches make it a popular tourist destination for Europeans and east coast North Americans alike, and, being known as a prime surfing centre, the town has developed a nightlife and surf-based culture worthy of international recognition.

Biarritz has always made its money from the sea. It was a whaling settlement from the twelfth century onwards and in the 18th century doctors advised that the surrounding ocean had therapeutic properties which led to patient pilgrimages. Since the 19th century, the British royal family have holidayed in the town, Queen Victoria being one such visitor. Today there is still plenty of old-fashioned luxury to soak up.

A two-day break:

Two days is enough time to appreciate what Biarritz is all about. The first day could be spent leisurely making your way along Le Grand Stroll, a beautiful seaside walking route, lined with pretty flowers. It begins at the lighthouse on headland, continues along the famous old promenade and over a bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel. The second day could be spent catching a surf lesson to experience one of the town’s most famous offerings.

A week-long stay
There is plenty to get stuck into during a week in Biarritz. In addition to surfing, take a day trip to the old and interesting town of Bayonne, which offers beaches and nearby huge forest Les Landes. Take the rickety, antique mining train, Le Petit Train de La Rhune, for an authentic view of the region. Wander around the town’s small independent boutiques and eat chocolate from one of the many specialist shops.

A family holiday
There’s plenty to occupy all the family in Biarritz, not least the large sweeping beaches for a free day out. The Museum of the Sea has aquariums, a shark tank, seal tank, and various collections, models, and exhibitions. Visit Planete Musee du Chocolat Biarritz, a chocolate museum with great samples of homemade chocolate when you buy your entrance ticket. Other than that, let the children enjoy all the fun that comes with a week in a seaside resort.

Biarritz is easily accessible from Paris by France's high-speed train, the TGV. Trains are also available for travel east towards Nice. The Biarritz - Anglet - Bayonne Airport is located about 4km from the city, only 1km from the Premiere Classe Biarritz hotel. Once there, it is easy to get around the town on foot.

Being so close to Spain, Biarritz’s cuisine has been strongly influenced by its neighbour. Its dishes tend to be spicy and the method for grilling fish and meat comes directly from the Spanish. A la plancha, for example, is meat or fish cooked on an open hotplate in its own fat.

Perhaps the most popular festival in Biarritz is the Surf Festival. Every July swathes of surfers gather at this surfing hotspot for a week-long party. Celebrations take place along every beach in town, and there’s no need for tickets - just show up any time of day and join in with the fun.

Interesting fact

At the end of World War II in Europe, the U.S. Army's Information and Educational Branch was ordered to establish an overseas university campus for demobilized American service men and women in Biarritz. The hotels and casinos were converted into quarters, labs and class spaces for U.S. service personnel.
