Clermont Ferrand is a French commune in the Auvergne region. It is also the capital of the Puy de Dome department. It sits on the plain of Limagne in the Massif Central and is surrounded by a major industrial area. The city is famous for the chain of volcanoes, the Chaîne des Puys, surrounding it. The famous dormant volcano Puy de Dome is one of the highest of these and well known for the telecommunication antennas that sit on its top and are visible from far away.

One of the oldest cities of France, the settlement witnessed the famous Battle of Gergovia, where the Gauls led by Vercingetorix triumphed temporarily over the Romans. Clairmont was famously the starting point of the First Crusade. In 1120, to counteract the power of the clergy, the counts of Auvergne founded the city of Montferrand. In 1630 the Edict of Troyes forcibly joined the two cities of Clermont and Ferrand. This union was confirmed in 1731 by Louis XV with the Second Edict of Union. Today one may find in Clermont Ferrand two distinct downtowns, with Montferrand retaining a strong identity.

A two-day trip:

Two days is just about enough time to get to know the city of Clermont Ferrand. Hotel Premiere Classe Clermont Ferrand Nord and Hotel Premiere Classe Clermont Ferrand Sud – Aubieres are both just a short taxi ride from the city’s star attraction: the Puy de Dome. You will want to spend your first day visiting the dormant volcano that overlooks the city where you can hike up it and parasail down it. For day two head to Place de Jaude where you will see the bronze statue of Vercingetorix – soldier from the Gallic wars – sculpted by the man who created the Statue of Liberty. Next check out the city’s two famous churches in the Romanesque Notre-Dame du Port (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the Gothic Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral.

A one-week break
A whole week is the perfect amount of time to really get to know the city of Clermont Ferrand. With the city home to Michelin tyres why not visit the L’Aventure Michelin where you can have a tour of the factory as well as checking out the testing track. If you fancy more great views of the city after Puy de Dome then head to Parc Montijuzet which is a park overlooking the city or if you don’t want to hike then Jardin Le Coq, which lies in the centre of town is another good bet but minus the views. The city also boasts some excellent museums such as Le Musee Roger Quilliot, showcasing art from the region, and the Musee Le Coq Natural History Museum.

A family holiday
Clermont Ferrand is a great place to take the whole family! Whether it is visiting the Vulcania theme park by the Puy-de-Dome, catching an ASM Clermont Auvergne rugby union game or exploring the Livradois-Forez Natural Park there will be something for everybody!

Transport
The city is served by the Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport located 3.6 miles east in Aulnat. Destinations include Paris, Lyon, Nantes and Southampton. The city’s train station is located on the eastern edge of centre ville on l'Avenue de l'Union Sovietique. Trains leave every couple of hours to and from Paris while there are also several other regional connections including Lyon, St Etienne, Moulins and Limoges.
For drivers the A71 connects Clermont Ferrand with Orleans and Bourges, the A72 with Saint-Étienne, the A75 with Montpellier and the A89 with Bordeaux . Both a bus and newly opened tram network will help you get around the city.

Gastronomy
The Auvergne region boasts hearty, tasty and varied food. A traditional recipe is the ‘potee Auvergnate’ which is a wintry casserole which combines the tangy taste of cabbage, along with other vegetables, with the finesse of French pork meat. A traditional desert is the ‘Auvergne tarte aux myrtilles’ – mouth-watering blueberry pie. The region is also known for its ‘Puy lentils’, which are used in many recipes, along with the full-bodied and salty Auvergne blue cheese.

Events

Clermont Ferrand hosts more than twenty music, film, dance and theatre festivals every year. Clermont-Ferrand’s cultural life is so important in France that one of the city's nicknames is ‘France's Liverpool’. The biggest event is the Festival du Court Metrage de Clermont-Ferrand in March – one of the leading international festivals for short films, attracting more spectators than Cannes. Other highlights include Jazz en Tete in the autumn, boasting the hottest new jazz talent, and Videoformes in the spring, which showcases the latest video technology.

Interesting fact
The city used to be two separate cities: Clairmont and Montferrand – hence its name.
