Chalon-sur-Saône is the birthplace of photography. Its most famous resident, Nicéphore Niépce, created the world’s first known photograph here in the 1800s. There is a school named after him and a museum with exhibits of his work and early photography. Indeed this is a mecca for photographers and historians alike. Chalon-sur-Saône is a lovely city with quaint houses and flower-clad pavements.

It is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the Burgundy region of eastern France. While it is the biggest city in Saône-et-Loire, it is not the capital, but it is full of welcoming cafés, fantastic bakeries and a tranquil river. It was once used as a port for transporting the locally-produced wines, but these days it is mainly used for leisure trips. The wine remains exquisite and there are plenty of places to sample them. Shoppers will love the bustling market and the speciality shops.

A two-day break
Two days is just enough time to see all the main sights of Chalon-sur-Saône. Stroll down to La Meulière and try the freshly baked biscuits and cheesy wafers. Take a trip to the Maison des Vins de la Côte Chalonnaise and sample the area's renowned wines. If you are an art lover, visit the Atelier St-Jean art gallery or Atelier du Bijou Creatif, where you can buy Celtic inspired jewellery made by Audrey and Patrick Leclercq.

A week-long stay
A week gives you plenty of time to explore Chalon-sur-Saône. The Premiere Classe Hotel Chalon-sur Saône is the perfect base for your trip because it is so close to the city centre. Visit the Nicéphore Niépce House, a museum dedicated to the work of the inventor, Nicéphore Niépce, who produced the world’s first photograph. It houses millions of photographs and some of the world’s first cameras. St Vincent’s Cathedral is an impressive structure and you can’t come to ths city without visiting the lively market, held several times a week. The river cruise is an enjoyable way to see the city whilst enjoying delicious cuisine.

A family holiday
Acroparc is the ideal place for a fun packed day with the whole family with a thrilling adventure park set in the forest. Think monkey bridges, ladders and catwalks. It is open from April to November.

The A6 is the nearest motorway to Chalon-sur-Saône from Paris and Lyon.
The Gare de Chalon-sur-Saône is the city's main railway station. It provides links from Paris, Dijon, Lyon, and many of the surrounding areas. There are regular buses which take you around the city and the Burgundy region. For those who prefer to explore the city at their own leisure, car hire is available.

Chalon-sur-Saône has eateries to suit every taste and budget. For a dinner with a difference, take a river cruise on La Delta. Enjoy French cuisine while admiring the city at a leisurely pace. If you would prefer something more rustic, visit La Meulière,a bakery serving fresh bread and delightful pastries.

There is always something going on in Chalon-sur-Saône,but Chalon Dans la Rue ("Chalon in the street") is probably the most notable event. It is a festival for street artists held every year in July for four days. There is comedy, music and theatre and it takes place all over the city.

Interesting fact
In addition to the first photograph, Nicéphore Niépce also invented Pyréolophore, which is believed to be the first internal combustion engine. This is also on display in the museum.
