Amiens is a commune and a city in northern France located in the Picardy region. Amiens is situated north of Paris and south-west of Arras and Lille. It is the capital of the Somme department. Amiens is most famous for its spectacular gothic cathedral. The Amiens Cathedral of Notre-Dame dates back to the 13th century and during the summer it is lit up to recreate its original colours. Amiens has been invaded several times throughout its bloody and violent history. Its prosperity made it a target during Roman times and it has been occupied by several invaders including the Normans and The Nazis.

Amiens is a wonderful place and is ideal for a family holiday or a romantic break. The city is in the basin of the river Somme and when it is lit up at night it is truly magical.

A two-day break
Two days is just enough time to discover the charm of this historical city. Start your first day by visiting the fantastic gothic cathedral. Amiens Cathedral is a UNESCO world heritage site and a spectacular structure. The ornate detail is testament to its Roman and Arabic builders. Spend your last day visiting Association pour la Protection et la Sauvegarde des Hortillonnages, ancient floating gardens that can only be reached by boat.

A week-long stay
You can experience so much of Amiens in a week and you are sure to have a holiday so magical it will be hard to forget. Musée de Picardie is one of the best museums in France and has some amazing exhibits from Egypt, Greece and France. Premiere Classe Amiens hotel is within easy reach of all the best attractions in the city. Nature lovers will appreciate the many parks and gardens that adorn this scenic place. Be sure to visit The Perret Tower, built in the 1950s and one of the first skyscrapers to be built in France. Have dinner in the city and be sure to try the Somme eels or the carp.

A family holiday
is a busy city with plenty of attractions for children. A trip to Parc Zoologique d'Amiens Métropole would be a great day out for all the family. There are numerous species of animals including penguins, sea lions, elephants and maned wolves.

Amiens is only about an hour from Paris by train and around two hours from Brussels by car. It can be reached by motorways A16 and the A29 from Calais, Rouen and Reims. There is a rail service within the town that covers most surrounding areas and a bus and taxi service.

There are some fantastic restaurants in Amiens. Le Bouchon is a traditional restaurant set in a lovingly restored 15th century house. Try the braised lamb in beer or the Somme eels cooked with herbs.

Festivals and events are held throughout the year in Amiens; Festival Jardins en Scène is held every year, celebrating the arrival of summer through theatre, dance, music and circus. During July there is "La cathédrale en couleurs" when the colours of Notre Dame on the exquisite cathedral are brought back to life with lights. Visit the city in August and you can watch the Défi Jules Verne in which about 20 hot air balloons take flight. You can even win a ride in one.

Interesting fact

Amiens has been presented with the prestigious 3* Ville Fleurie award thanks to its immaculate gardens and parks. The 3 star award is a high status and is only awarded to beautiful, flowered towns.
